Impact Assessments

Impact Assessments:
Providing sound management and mitigation strategies

Comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are integral to our major growth and development plans. EIAs are not only an important component in our regulatory applications, they also provide us with long-term management and mitigation strategies to ensure our major projects meet environmental, social and economic goals-commitments developed in consultation with stakeholders.

For our proposed Primrose East Expansion Project, we filed in January 2006 an integrated regulatory application under Alberta's Oil Sands Conservation Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and Water Act. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was also submitted in support of this application. If you would like to receive a CD of the application, please contact us at: primrose@cnrl.com

An EIA of the Horizon Oil Sands Project was submitted to regulators in June 2002 and a subsequent regulatory hearing was held in September 2003. EUB and Alberta Environment approval for the project was issued in early 2004. The Governments of Canada and Alberta issued Orders in Council to allow the Project to proceed. Canadian Natural's Board of Directors approved the commencement of construction on February 10, 2005.
